Human Rights Journalism Awards Ceremony on Jan 28 , 2010 in Islamabad

 

Pakistani journalists nominated as best reporters for covering human rights issues during the year 2009, w ill be awarded prizes for excellence in reporting in a ceremony to be held on January 28 , 2010 in Islamabad Hotel, G-6 Islamabad at 4 pm.

Journalists of Islamabad and Rawalpindi representing print and electronic media organizations, m embers of j ournalist s u nions , m edia e xperts and students will be participating in the award ceremony hosted by Intermedia and The Asia Foundation. Federal Minister for Human Rights will be the c hief g uest and distribute prizes to five Pakistani j ournalists for excellence in reporting on h uman r ights i ssues.

The award was announced by Intermedia, a media development organization, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation as part of its efforts to raise the profile of human rights in the Pakistani media.

According to the result s announced on December 10, 2009 in connection with International Human Rights Day, Rana Muhammad Afzal (Jang daily) from Rahimyar Khan won the Human Rights Journalism Award 2009 with a cash prize of Rs50,000 for the category of print media in national languages (English and Urdu).

There was one award for regional language but as a number of excellent entries were received, the committee decided to divide the Rs50,000 prize for the category among Mehruallah Raisani (Brahvi language daily Talar) from Noshki, Muhammad Ayub (Pashto daily Jid-o-Jehad) from Mardan and Jameel Soomro (Sindhi language fortnightly Ibrat) from Sukkur for their reports.

Rs50,000 award for the category of national electronic media for excellence in reporting on human rights issues was won by Naziha Mehmood of Samaa TV, from Karachi.
