Helping Pakistani Media Meet the Challenge of Reporting on Health Issues

One of the major projects undertaken by Intermedia, concluded in February 2007, was conducting a series of training workshops to build capacity of Pakistani media on mothers and newborns (MNH) healthcare issues.

This major media initiative was launched in Pakistan in August 2006 to improve coverage of and public knowledge about home and hospital-based healthcare for mothers and newborns. The initiative included a series of high-quality training workshops for print, radio and television journalists to build the capacity of Pakistani media to cover mother and newborn healthcare (MNH) issues to improve public education on the subject.

The first of the four training workshops was held in Murree from September 21-23, 2006; second in Bhurban November 21-24, 2006; third in Islamabad November 28 to December 1, 2006 and fourth in Karachi , December 19-22, 2006.

In all, 112 journalists, including 28 females (25 percent), were trained in reporting on issues of Mothers and Newborns Healthcare (MNH). The trainees were from print (63%), television (31%) and radio (6%) media. Of these, 96 per cent belonging to private media, and attended the trainings.

The project also developed a formal network of reporters trained in covering MNH issues and resource persons to improve access to data and information on the subject. Participants were also being awarded stipends for investigative reports and given awards for best reports highlighting MNH issues.

Funded by the Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN), a project of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), was implemented by Intermedia Pakistan, a media development NGO working to develop media capacities and improve journalism standards.

PAIMAN is a five-year project designed to reduce Pakistan 's maternal and neonatal mortality by making sure women have access to skilled birth attendants during childbirth and throughout the postpartum period.

The trainings focused on reporting health issues with special reference healthcare for mothers and newborns; understanding issues related to health care of mothers and newborns; practical solutions to cover health issues; and knowledge and practical tools to collect and report health-related data.
