Attack on Media Intimidation Six journalists booked on terror charges |
|
The Shaukat Aziz government quietly registered cases of terrorism against six Islamabad-based journalists with the Secretariat Police, after holding them responsible for the violence of September 29.
FIR against the journalists was registered on the direction of IGP Islamabad Syed Moravat Ali Shah before his suspension and sealed. Although, the name of Tariq Azeem has not been made an excuse in the FIR under anti-terrorism clauses but police sources say the real motive behind this drastic action is to settle scores with the journalists. FIR No 166 has been registered in Secretariat Police Station and SHO Khursheed Ahmed Khan is the complainant in the case. If the charges against these journalists are proved in the anti-terrorism court, they might face either death penalty or life imprisonment.
Those booked under section 7 of the Anti-Terrorist Act (ATA) as well as sections 341 and 149 PPC include Aslam Khan, Babar Shahzad, Sohail, Irfan, Abdur Rehman and Rehan Shaikh. Sources in the Interior Ministry said it has been decided at a high-level meeting that the journalists would be arrested after the completion of inquiry. They may obtain pre-arrest bail from the court of law to face trial, they said. These journalists have been accused of stopping the motorcade of Punjab chief minister when he tried to come out of the Election Commission on September 29.

BHC disposes of Munir Mengal’s petition |
|
A division bench of the Balochistan High Court has disposed of the constitutional petition filed by Director 'Baloch Voice' channel, Munir Ahmed Mengal. The bench while disposing of the petition observed that since the petitioner had been detained in criminal case, there was no need for further action on the petition.
The FIR has been registered against him in his involvement in anti-state activities. Then, counsel for the petitioner Jamil-ur-Rehman decided to approach the court. The bench comprising Chief Justice Amanullah Khan Yasinzai and Justice Akhtar Zaman Malghani was hearing the petition filed by Munir Mengal on September 12 pleading that the High Court had declared his detention as illegal and unlawful on September 10, 2007, but the DPO Kalat had detained him once again under Section-3 of sub-section (1) of Maintenance of Public Order 1960 on the same day. He prayed to the court to declare the detention as null and void. |

Beginning October 29, the CPU is offering two courses, business journalism and basic journalism and ethics, to upcoming mass communication students working with newspapers registered with the CPU. The courses will be conducted by Gareth Weekes, a former UK regional newspaper editor, who now runs the communications consultancy Deep South Media Ltd. “He and his team produce newspapers and magazines and run training courses for public and private sector clients,” said a British Council (BC) representative. The BC also said that Gareth is very experienced in running successful online courses for the CPU, “Students will appreciate his knowledge as well as his character.” The business journalism course is for reporters who have been working in the business sector for at least three years. This online training programme aims to train journalists to be able to report business issues effectively and clearly. “It is for making reports reader friendly, improving business coverage in newspapers and also for teaching reporters how to cater to female readers who are mostly not interested in current business affairs,” explained the BC representative. |

Radio Fm listening | Ramazan and FM channels by Sehrish Wasif |
|
Ludicrous and lavish amount of dose of music being broadcast on the FM channels for the listeners is just like near-zero nutritional value pakoras and samosas for empty-bellied 'Rozadaar'. Why music has been made an integral part of the Ramazan diet is beyond comprehension. It is quiet disappointing to hear a few programs on FM Channels as there is nothing in them which gives a clue that these are meant for Ramazan. The broadcast of western music during Sehr and Iftar from City FM 89 is just not reasonable. Even in between the songs airing Fajr and Maghrib Azaan is not a good omen. One can say that the channel is trying to present both Western and Eastern culture side by side.
