Media Protest PFUJ condemns kidnapping of journalist |
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has expressed concern over the kidnapping of a senior journalist and criticised the government for having done nothing to trace him. Raiz Mengal, acting president of the Khuzdar Press Club, was kidnapped three days ago. In a statement issued here on Sunday, PFUJ president Syed Huma Ali accused the government of using such tactics to pressurise the journalist community and impose curbs on freedom of the press. The statement said that although journalists had identified the culprits, no action had so far been taken against them. The PFUJ called upon the Balochistan government to immediately recover Riaz Mengal and arrest all the influential people involved in the inhuman act. |

Critique on Media Letter to Editor, “A media assault” |
Arooj Mehru comments, “Media seems to have lost all ethics. The government council has not only been assaulted by the advocates but by the media as well. Both print and electronic media has tried to create sensationalism by printing and telecasting derogatory headlines and news items regarding Ahmad Raza Kasoori assault case. It tarnished the image of Ahmad Raza Kasoori in two ways. The print and electronic media has used the proverb “moonh kala kar dia”in wrong connotation both editorially and through pictures and footages showing Mr Kasoori’s blackened face. Freedom of expression and information is a prerequisite of a free and democratic society. But this freedom should not be an unbridled one. Media’s role is not to take sides but to be impartial.” |
