Press under siege | Battling for freedom by Sadaf Arshad |
|
“More than two dozen media persons sustained injuries in this callous baton charge and also faced teargas. The shelling of teargas is a reminder of the mishap of Lal Masjid. The criticism that followed that incident does not seem to have taught any lessons to the government. The planning of such attacks on civil society, including the media, is a decisive notion and a thought-provoking situation. It throws ample light on how much our government respects the media and civil society.”

Breathing space | Of media and other daemons by Farrukh Khan Pitafi |

“This phenomenon becomes much more appalling when one witnesses some of the media practitioners advocating the cause of those who regard journalism as essentially evil in nature. Finally, when the custodians of justice also show media sickness, one starts losing faith in the very purpose of life.”

Telecommunications Multi-metering: PTA urged to reject PTCL’s request |
|
Internet Services Providers Association of Pakistan (ISPAP) has asked Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to throw out Pakistan Telecommunication Company’s request for starting multi-metering in the country. In a petition, ISPAP said multimetering of local Internet calls would make Internet costly. This step if approved by the PTA, would have adverse effect on country’s development, education and research efforts, it cautioned adding that low quality of PTCL’s copper network and associated technical problems lead to frequent disconnections and reestablishing the connection by redialling, dial-up users are already charged for many local calls while accessing the Internet. Multi-metering, the internet association feared, would compound the agonies of the dialup users. PTCL had sought permission from PTA for starting multimetering for charging internet access. It is believed that the move may significantly increase the cost of internet use. The decision is likely to affect over 4 million internet users, who access internet through dial-up connections. More than 98 per cent of the country’s Internet users still rely on dial-up technology to access the Internet.
