Continuing attacks on press condemned |
The Tuesday attempt on the life of Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) president Shamim-ur-Rehman was condemned by the journalist community and political quarters as an attempt to gag the press. The KUJ, at its meeting at the Karachi Press Club on Wednesday, vowed to lodge its protest against the attack during the Sindh Assembly session on Thursday. The meeting was attended by the office-bearers and members of the KUJ, KPC and the Association of Television Journalists. Mr Rehman was almost run over by a white-coloured car when he was walking towards a taxi stand near his residence. The KUJ executive council urged the government to take punitive measures against the elements that had been targeting the media and journalists with the aim of stopping them from bringing the truth to the masses. It flayed the government for having failed to ensure safety and security to journalists and other citizens. The KUJ asked the government to get the culprits arrested till Saturday failing which the journalist community would decide the future course of action in a meeting scheduled for Monday at 3pm.

Of freedom and violence by Imtiaz Ali |
The police’s action against journalists and lawyers in Islamabad on September 29 during the scrutiny of nomination papers of presidential candidates is widely believed to be a show of ruthlessness against political dissent and lack of respect for democratic rights.
It provoked emotional outbursts, resulting in the thrashing of a minister and an important political leader. Karachi’s journalists took out a rally and observed a black day as part of the countrywide protest against the high-handedness of the government. They demanded action against the police officials of the capital. They said the authorities wasted no time in arresting some lawyers allegedly involved in an attack on the political leader and asked why action was not taken against those policemen who subjected 21 media men to torture. For many, the police’s action was unexpected. They cited several reasons behind it. General Pervez Musharraf had overcome major legal challenges as the Supreme Court dismissed petitions against his eligibility to contest presidential polls while the Election Commission (EC) accepted his nomination papers, rejecting the objections of the opposition and lawyer candidates. It was expected that now he would show magnanimity.

Advertising Let billboards be for now, SHC tells cantt boards |
A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC), comprising Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and Justice Faisal Arab, restrained the Cantonment Board Karachi from removing advertisement boards from residential areas. The bench also ordered the respondent boards to come up with relevant rules or laws that permit them to remove billboards installed at private buildings. The orders came in a petition filed by the Outdoor Advertising Association that had sought a stay order, maintaining that the court had ordered the removal of huge billboards that were dangerous to public life and property. The petition said that the cantonment boards were misusing the court’s directives and were targeting advertisements on private buildings that were harmless. The bench, after hearing the initial arguments given by counsel for the petitioners Syed Raza Hashmi, restrained the respondents and adjourned further proceedings till October 17.
