Attack on Media Intimidation Senior journalist escapes bid on life |
Another senior member of the journalist fraternity escaped an attempt on his life on Tuesday when unidentified persons tried to crush him under the wheels of their vehicle outside his residence in Gulistan-e-Jauhar in broad daylight. Senior journalist and President of Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) Shamim-ur-Rehman said he was waiting for a cab on Tuesday afternoon on a green belt outside his residence in Gulistan-e-Jauhar near Jauhar Chowrangi when a white or grey car tried to hit him but luckily they failed to cause any harm. “There was neither traffic on the road nor they were trying to avoid any other vehicle. I consider it an attempt on my life as I had received threatening calls yesterday prior to and after the journalists’ protest in the city against manhandling of their colleagues in Islamabad on Saturday last” he informed. Rehman told that he had not lodged any complaint with police as “nothing happens on such complaints” but said the matter would be raised in a hurriedly-called meeting of the KUJ tomorrow or day after tomorrow and any decision in this regard would be taken soon. It should be recalled here that three Karachi-based senior journalists had received bullets in envelopes as threats in May 2007 and two of them have already got themselves transferred to federal capital.

The Punjab Assembly's Press Gallery Committee has decided to boycott the assembly session starting from Wednesday (today) at 11:00am. The 15-minute boycott, to be observed at the start of the session, will be observed to express solidarity with the Islamabad-based journalists and to condemn the barbaric baton charge on them. The decision was made at the committee's meeting, held at the assembly's chamber Tuesday. The journalists covering the Punjab Assembly proceedings will come out of the assembly building and stage a protest in front of it. The meeting, through a resolution, asked the government to take punitive action against the police officials who resorted to heavy baton charge and injured dozens of journalists in front of the election commission building in Islamabad. |

Repeating mistake by Zia Shahid |
“The main victims were the reporters and photographers of the TV channels and newspapers. Representatives of the government and the opposition left the scene while media men bore the brunt of all the beatings. A poor journalist is always in a difficult situation. If he does not perform his duties aggressively, his seniors question him. It is common for active media men to be exposed to police beatings. Every action has a reaction. Amongst all the ministers, Tariq Azeem is the most friendly and kind to journalists. In his office or home, journalists always surround him. He always entertains them. But on Saturday, when he returned after removing an injured journalist to a hospital, certain journalists attacked him, according to a report. Dr Farooq Sattar belongs to the MQM. Personally he is a very friendly and balanced person. He dropped an injured journalist at a hospital where some lawyers attacked him and he got injured.” |

PBA refutes Pemra allegations |
Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) strongly refuted all allegations that any of its member broadcasters has broken the rules and regulations laid down in Pemra ordinance.
Secretary General Arshad Zuberi, in his letter to respond to a warning letter, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), has written to various news channels, strongly reiterated the association's point of view that the members have not gone beyond limits and bounds of freedom that is allowed in the Constitution. "Airing of discussions, current affairs programmes/talk shows are not prohibited under any law, and freedom of expression, speech and information is basic right of every citizen of Pakistan," he said on Tuesday. "In this perspective, the warning letter issued by Pemra is flagrant violation of Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and PBA reserves its right to challenge it in the competent court of law," he contended. "The current affairs programmes/talk shows are merely exchange of different views and thoughts on constitutional provisions, its interpretation and implications. “The participants simply deliver their opinions and views in an academic manner. The hosts/anchors are just facilitating the talk shows and only placing different questions for collecting the opinions from both sides.

PFUJ leaders appreciated the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision to suspend officials responsible for the violence and said that the decision should have come from the government.
