Journalist’s advice on use of helmet infuriates traffic cop
The city traffic police are on a spree abusing power without any check. Instead of supervising and ensuring proper traffic, it has been seen that the traffic cops themselves are violating the traffic laws. A few years ago, it was on record that the traffic police was totally stained with the allegations of taking bribe and making money illegally. But at present, another issue which is spoiling their reputation is the lack of discipline creating many problems not only for those victimised but also for themselves. Often the traffic police sergeants dressed in white and blue uniform are spotted over speeding their bikes, in jam-packed roads keeping aside all the law and regulations. A number of Rawalpindi traffic squad penetrating the city streets lack regular number plates making it difficult to differentiate the police staff's identity. On Friday morning, this scribe found one such over speeding traffic sergeant riding his bike without a number plate near 7up Chowk. Near Double Road signal, when the scribe pointed out the issue of absence of helmet and of the number plate, the sergeant misbehaved, threatened the scribe and replied, "Don't advise me." Journalists like you are inside my pockets. Do what ever you want? I am not afraid of any one. We are accountable to none. It's up to me that whatever I like will do."

Dawn Editorial “HEC’s plagiarism policy”
“Hopefully this policy will bring about more academic uprightness in higher education institutes. The need is also to address the problem in schools which, after all, lay the foundations of all future academic habits. In our lopsided educational system the tendency of policymakers is to focus on higher education while neglecting school learning. However, all the effort that goes into improving the higher education set-up will produce few dividends if similar attempts are not made to upgrade primary schools. It is in the latter that young minds are moulded to differentiate between right and wrong and to inculcate good study habits. If the teaching is poor at this stage, then things can go wrong later on, especially when students are completing degree programmes to enter the global job market where competition is stiff. For reasons practical and ethical, then, it is important that students are taught the right values from the very beginning and are given clear guidelines on doing independent research. That is the only way they will stay away from dishonest academic practices.”

  Software pirate arrested
A computer vendor having his business on I.I. Chundrigar Road was arrested on Friday allegedly for copying pirated software on new machines. Police also seized 259 illegal CDs and a personal computer with the pirated software installed in it. “A criminal case has been registered against the vendor for violating the Copyright Law as part of the countrywide crackdown on software pirates,” said a Business Software Alliance (BSA) spokesman on Friday. He said the vendor had ignored the BSA warnings of such an action if he did not stop his illegal business. The spokesman said people indulged in software piracy should refrain from continuing with their illegal business to avoid similar action. He said BSA was operating in 80 countries around the world and helping the law-enforcement agencies to book and arrest software pirates after registering criminal cases against them. Users of pirated software might also face action, he warned.
