Media Miscellaneous US concerned over harassment of journalists in Pakistan |
The US embassy expressed concern on Friday over incidents of harassment and attacks on journalists in Pakistan. A statement issued by the embassy here said US Embassy Acting Deputy Chief of Mission E Candace Putnam and Public Affairs Counsellor Kay Webb Mayfield called on Information and Broadcasting Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani on Friday to express concern over “recent incidents of Pakistani journalists being subjected to assaults and harassment”. According to the statement, Putnam cited the cases of television journalists who were assaulted while covering events at Islamabad airport on September 10, the reported attack on the son of a South Asian News Agency editor on September 14, and the reported abduction and interrogation of a Dawn TV reporter from September 15 to17. The diplomats said intense media scrutiny would be focused on Pakistan during the upcoming elections and other political events, with large numbers of national and international journalists covering developments in the country. The US embasy statement said they urged the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to work closely with the police and other agencies responsible for maintaining public order to ensure that journalists are able to perform their jobs without intimidation and fear of reprisal.

Television 75 private TV channels by year-end: Durrani |
A total of 75 private TV channels will be fully operative by the year-end. The government has taken a number of steps for ensuring independence of media which helped develop vibrant and dynamic media institutions in the country, Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani Friday said. The media, he said, is now playing "a significant role to further strengthen the democratic society." He expressed these views while talking to acting Deputy Chief of Mission, United States of America, Ms. Candace Putnam and Counselor Public Affairs Elizabeth K. Mayfield who called on him here at his office and exchanged views on mutual interests. "We are facing an acute demand-supply imbalance regarding skilled media professionals, as their demand in the media industry is multiplying with each passing day," he said.
To address this situation, he added, the government has initiated steps to launch the project of Islamabad Media University which would be one of its kind in the entire South Asian region as well as the Muslim World. Ms Putnam appreciated the steps taken by the ministry of information for facilitating the growth of the Pakistani media organizations and assured full cooperation in this regard.

Editorial Daily Times, “Assessing TV anchors” |
An extremely interesting debate was initiated on a TV channel Thursday about the quality of the TV channels in general and their coverage of the political scene or “current affairs” in Pakistan. The deliberately created ambivalence about the intentions of the Musharraf government about the freedom of the press was also frankly discussed. While it was conceded that some of the flaws of the TV channels were the result of sudden expansion without trained manpower, the phenomenon was still called a success. Anchors Mubashir Luqman of Business Plus and Mrs Salahuddin of Indus TV must be complimented on pointing out the weaknesses of the “hosts” who conduct discussion programmes. First of all, all the anchors are bitten by the “Tim Sebastian bug” and show aggression where they should practise professional self-effacement. The most glaring and misleading “knowledge-gap” comes to the fore when discussing foreign policy. The most demeaning moment comes when the usually “warlike” anchor starts cowering before the clergy. If lack of knowledge of Islam leads to humility, why doesn’t humility also manifest itself when discussing foreign policy?
