PBA condemns illegal detention of journalist |
The Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) strongly condemns the illegal detention of a local TV news correspondent Babar Hussain in Rawalpindi. According to Hussain, as conveyed to PBA, he was picked up by unknown people on the night of Saturday September 15, from his house in Faizabad, Rawalpindi. He was blindfolded and taken to an unknown location and interrogated for two days, after which he was released in Mianwali on Monday, September 17. Babar Hussain was one of the Dawn News reporters who were investigating the bomb blast in Ghazi Terbela. This incident is an attempt to impinge on the freedom of speech and expression and a blatant curb on the freedom of media. PBA demands the government, especially Minister of Information & Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani, to investigate and take immediate action against this illegal detention. PBA reiterates its stance that the journalists must be allowed to perform their professional duties freely, as they are competent to take cognizance while covering sensitive institutions as allowed by the law of the land. PBA expects a timely action against this uncalled-for high handedness. |

”Dawn editorial, “Risks journalists face |
“Such acts of intimidation and threats against journalists are simply unacceptable. So is the government’s inability to check its security apparatus for its illegal detention of journalists. The murder of reporter Hayatullah Khan in 2006 remains unsolved as do scores of cases of illegal detentions or attacks on media persons. They must all be seriously investigated and the guilty must be punished in accordance with the law. The government has a responsibility to ensure that journalists can do their job in an environment free of risk and intimidation. Threats to silence the media will only cause more harm to the government.” |

Advertising Advertisers find print still stronger than electronic media |
The significance of the print medium can never be overlooked because other advertising channels, including the electronic media, do not have such strength and flexibility as the newspapers and magazines do. A printed message gives information to readers with more convenience than other means of communication do.These observations were made by Manhattan Pakistan's Resident Director Brig (r) Muhammad Zubair Rehan, while talking to The Post during an interview here the other day. Zubair maintained that with the increase in the literacy rate the printed-message would. assume even more importance. He said that although the penetration of the electronic media was more, it was not suitable for certain products. For example, he pointed out, there would be very low response if one advertised a commercial of a luxury product on a satellite channel because research revealed that buyers of luxury goods would hardly had time to watch TV, adding that they prefer to read only leading newspapers to update themselves.
