A 60-member Halimzai tribe jirga on Monday banned the sale of narcotics and obscene CDs in Mohmand Agency, and gave shopkeepers a week to change their businesses or face action. A jirga member, Mohammad Ali Halimzai, told Daily Times that they had set a one-week deadline for those selling obscene CDs, heroin, alcohol and other narcotics in the agency. He said the jirga would take action through a “Qaumi Lashkar” against the violators of the ban. Internet The News Editorial “Why so expensive?” |
“The question that the IT ministry as well as the various Internet companies providing broadband services need to be asked why broadband is still so expensive. According to the figures revealed at the conference, broadband in Pakistan on average costs more than ten times what it costs in India or even Sri Lanka. Why is that the case? What happened to the much-trumpeted reductions in the price of bandwidth announcement several times in recent years by the government (PTCL holds a monopoly on this and all reductions come via it)? Was this lowering of the bandwidth cost cosmetic or were bandwidth rates in Pakistan so high to begin with that even after significant reductions their absolute levels are still higher than those in Indian or Sri Lanka? The government needs to adopt a policy that reduces the cost of broadband use -- the technology that is now most popular all across the world -- because the benefits of using the Internet are many and needed for a country like Pakistan. In any case, the monopoly of one company on bandwidth ownership needs to be broken, since that is the most likely reason why broadband users in Pakistan have to pay through their nose for a service that is not even that reliable.” |

ECP website displays un-amended rules |
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which remained docile when 'forced' to amend the presidential election rules, is nevertheless showing 'defiance' by displaying the un-amended rules on its official website. The ECP officials are of the view that this drastic amendment has been made to please the top man. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Farooq Qazi who was among those who had taken oath under Musharraf's PCO, denied that the changes were person-specific and said that the rules would apply to all the presidential candidates at the time of scrutiny of the nomination papers which will be conducted 'strictly on merit'. However, discussions with the ECP officials reveal that the Commission was asked to send the copy of rules to the Presidency which was subsequently amended a couple of weeks before the election schedule. |

Telecommunications PTA delays survey on cellphone operators |
No quality of service survey and inspection of the mobile phone operators have been carried out by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority during the last one year or so. In the absence of any such survey findings, the authority is not in a position to penalise a cellular company for not improving its service. It is unclear as why to the authority has delayed the survey and whether it has purchased equipment required for the purpose. While the PTA sleeps, cell phone users are paying the price in the shape of disconnection of calls and difficulty in connectivity and failure of SMS messages, especially on weekends. Besides, different operators have introduced packages charging nominal rates for using the network after midnight that often results in overburdening it (network). |
