Attack on Media Intimidation Munir Mengal not released despite court order |
|
Despite Munir Mengal’s acquittal by the Balochistan High Court on Wednesday, authorities have not yet released the managing director of the yet-to-be-launched Baloch Voice TV channel, sources told Daily Times. Sources said Mengal had once again been whisked away to an unknown location despite the Balochistan High Court ruling, according to which he was cleared of all charges and was to be released with immediate effect. Members of Mengal’s family said they did not know where Mengal had gone after the verdict. They expected him to be released shortly after the court found him not-guilty on all charges against him, and declared his detention under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance unwarranted. Mengal’s family said they presumed he had been picked up by intelligence agencies for further questioning. |

Chakwal press club stormed over MQM’s minister’s arrival |
|
Activists of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and lawyers took out a rally on the arrival of Federal Housing Minister Iqbal Muhammad Ali Khan here on Thursday. They marched towards the press club where the minister, who belongs to the Muttahida Qaumi MOvement (MQM) was administering oath to the newly-elected office-bearers of the Chakwal Press Club. Three lawyers along with their companions entered the press club building and chanted slogans against the minister, the MQM and President Gen Pervez Musharraf, forcing the organizers to stop the function. In the meantime, the journalists pushed out the protesting lawyers from the hall.
Earlier, when the minister reached in front of the district bar association building on Chakwal-Talagang Road, the lawyers blocked the road and tried to stop his vehicle.
Later, addressing a function, Federal Housing Minister Iqbal Muhammad Ali Khan said it was a sheer violence and unlawful activity of political activists and lawyers.
He said the MQM had struggled for the freedom of press and it was an attack on the freedom of press. He said protest was the right of the people but it did not mean that they should take law into their hands. Meanwhile, the Tehsil Nazim said that strict action would be taken against the miscreants. Also, Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has directed the district administration to take action against the accused involved in the incident. City and Sadr police have registered cases against more than 30 activists and started investigations. |

Media Protest Threats hurled at journalists condemned |
|
The Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) has taken strong exception to threats hurled against media persons by leaders of political parties and other ‘pressure groups’, over not reporting in conformity with their liking and aspiration. In a statement issued on Thursday, the KUJ vowed to jealously guard the freedom of the press and security of journalists. The KUJ reminds the political leaders that instead of encouraging people to take the law into their own hands and break the limbs of those whose reports are not considered favourable to them, they should resort to legal remedies. “The KUJ is also shocked that the entire profession of journalism has been equated with prostitution, which is not only abhorring but also unacceptable,” it said. The KUJ maintained that if any harm was done to the journalists, their organisations and their family members, those who hurled such a threat would be held responsible. “We hope that the government will fulfil its constitutional and moral responsibilities in case of any such illegal act,” it said. The KUJ assures all the political parties, including those in the ruling coalition, that it will keep fulfilling professional journalistic responsibilities without any bias. It also appeals to the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and concerned quarters and IFJ to take serious note of the threats.

Movies Film and video installation art lecture at IVSAA: |
|
no.w.here does it say that you are limited to paper canvas
One of the most fascinating aspects of art is that it inherently holds limitless possibilities, not just when it comes to the medium but the canvas as well. With the expansion of technology, the obscure is being preferred over the obvious. Film and video art and related installations are a rare sight in Pakistan. Thus it was with great excitement that an audience of art students gathered for the lecture by Karen Mirza and Brad Butler, who are video artists from the UK, at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) Wednesday. Both artists work in collaboration with each other along with other artists. They were invited by VASL to showcase their videos and work with contemporary Pakistani artists. Video installation is an art form which combines videos and installations to utilise the surrounding environment and create an impact on the viewer who also may become a part of it. Butler and Mirza incorporate sound, light and movement with stationary objects such as sculptures and architecture. Their videos especially depict the transition between noise and silence, inertia and movement.

Letter to Editor, “Animals in the cinema” |
|
Dr Irfan Zafar , “Don Belt, assistant editor of National Geographic's field notes published in the September issue, narrates an incident whereas in Lahore a young guy, a street performer, wearing a funky feathered hat and accompanied by a black dog, a white goat and a monkey in a circus outfit entered a movie theatre after buying the tickets from the box office and set himself and his animals up in a row of rickety seats near the front. When he was stopped by the ticket-collector at the door to the cinema hall for bringing animals into the movie theatre, the young man said, "Animals need to be entertained as much as we do". It is a good omen that things are changing in our country with due respect and care now being shown to animals (One is nor sure if the same could be said about humans though). However on another note, only our animals can digest the kind of movies our film industry has been producing (with the exception of "Khuda kay lye") for years.
