Media and extremism by R Khan
“Desensitization is another method which serves the purpose of extremists and terrorists indirectly. According to this hypothesis, repeated viewing of TV violence leads to a reduction in emotional responsiveness to violence on the screen and to an increased acceptance of violence in real life. In the light of the knowledge of extremists' use of media for their radical purposes, there is the need for an elaborate strategy to protect the society and the state from total radicalisation.”

Chughtai's son to move court against PTV
The PTV insignia was originally designed by MA Rahman Chughtai in 1964 and was later modified by him. The current PTV management has no right to modify it. They can make a new design but cannot modify the old one. Legendary artist MA Rahman Chughtai’s son Arif Rahman Chughtai, who is founder of the Chughtai Art Home, stated this while talking to The Nation on Saturday. The PTV recently went ahead to change its logo, which had been designed by the late Chughtai. The PTV management sometime back announced to change the insignia. “The PTV management said in its statement ‘Our new logo is an upgrade of the classic to represent the spirit behind the new vision and desire to move ahead.’ Is it possible to upgrade a classic? They have distorted the image. It was a feminine design. They have now turned it into a masculine one. Only the artist himself has the right to modify his design,” Arif said. Besides the PTV logo Chughtai also designed the first postal stamp of Pakistan, first letter head of the government of Pakistan as well as logos of Radio Pakistan and Alhamra. “These logos are historical icons and classics. Modifying any of these logos is an insult to the art genius of Pakistan. Rather than modifying the logo PTV management should try to improve the content of programmes,” Arif was of the view. He explained the characteristics of the logo designed by his father. “It was meant to be a beautiful symbol and was related to the ideology of Pakistan. The lines and curves make arches representing our rich heritage. The waves patterns were meant to symbolise the broadcast of our ideology. The design was also based on peacock in all its glory of various colours. It was definitely feminine. The logo remained our icon for 43 years. Now suddenly somebody thought that things can be improved by changing the logo.

PTA to fine cellular companies with poor services
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a ‘comprehensive quality of service’ service on increasing number of complaints of overcharging and poor quality of service against cellular companies.

Letter to Editor, “Monitoring SMS messages”
Dr Irfan Zafar, “The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed all the mobile operators in the country to start monitoring SMS text messages sent by mobile users in order to impose censorship and block mobile connections of users spreading anti-government content. Speaking purely on technical grounds and without going into the separate debate on the morality of the act, the initiated exercise is bound to face the same fate as PTA’s campaign of tracking down stolen mobiles in the country. What PTA does not realise is that technology is always one step ahead. The advisors behind the idea to monitor SMS text messages seem to have ignored the fact that there exist mechanisms for secure transmission of messages using encryption in all mobile devices. Applications for sending encrypted SMS messages using cryptographic methods is already being researched and its commercial deployment is expected in the near future. Let’s not waste our energies and resources on a fruitless exercise which will take us no where. Should we not instead strive to encourage freedom of expression using advanced technologies for the benefit of establishing a just society?”
