ACHR concerned over journalist’s ‘harassment’ |
|
The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) expressed concern here on Thursday over the “harassment” of a Mirpur-based AJK journalist for writing a book titled ‘Kashmir Ki Pukar’.
The book, which was widely circulated in Pakistan, is quite critical of the role of ISI and religious fundamentalist parties in carrying out the “holy war” against India in Jammu and Kashmir. The centre claimed that NWFP officially banned the book through a notification on October 21, and its author Arif Malik had been warned that he would be arrested if he entered the province. It said that Malik had since been getting threatening telephone calls to make him apologise in public. A press release by the ACHR claimed most calls received by the journalist were from the ISI, and police had refused to register a complaint. It said Arif’s family was shifting from one place to another to escape the “colluded wrath of the government and fundamentalists”. The centre called on people to write to President Musharraf and NWFP chief minister Akram Durrani to provide security to the journalist and his family. Arif Malik has worked with various newspapers in Pakistan, and is currently the editor of a monthly magazine. He was forced to close down the magazine after his book was proscribed.

Journalists walk out of Senate: Newsman’s kidnapping |
|
Journalists on Wednesday staged a token walkout in the Senate to protest against what they termed was the government’s inability to recover a Peshawar-based journalist who was abducted on Jan 2. They had also staged a walk out from the upper house on Monday against the kidnapping before the government reassured them that the interior ministry would come out with ‘a solid statement’ on the outcome of its investigations on Wednesday. However, the journalists were dismayed after Minister of State for Interior Zafar Iqbal Warriach said that according to preliminary investigations, the incident appeared to be a kidnapping for ransom case and advised the MMA-led NWFP government to take the matter seriously.
