  Kidnapping of journalist: PPC and KhUJ to launch countrywide protest on 25th
  The Peshawar Press Club (PPC) Action Committee and the Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) have demanded that law enforcement agencies ensure the safe recovery of Sohail Qalandar, resident editor of a daily newspaper, within two days, otherwise they would start a protest movement throughout the country on January 25, 2007. The PPC Action Committee held a meeting presided over by its chairman Shamim Shahid. The committee members condemned the kidnapping of Sohail and expressed concern over the government’s slow efforts towards recovering the missing people. The committee members said the law enforcement agencies were indifferent towards the issue and demanded that the provincial and federal governments take effective steps for recovering him.

  Action against channels airing unethical ads
  Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and Ministry of Health have joined hands to arrest misleading advertisement of remedies for different ailments on TV channels. According to an official statement Chairman PEMRA and Secretary Health held a meeting in this regard underlining need to take immediate action against the channel propagating unethical advertising.

  Sherpao told to submit report on abducted journalist
  Acting chairman Senate Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali on Tuesday directed Federal Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao to present a report to the Upper House on Jan 26 about NWFP senior journalist Sohail Qalandar who has been missing for the last 20 days. In response to a boycott of the House proceedings by media persons from the press gallery, Minister of State for Education Anisa Zeb Tahirkheili informed the Senate that Sohail was abducted in Fata. The journalists have sought directions from the Chair to the political administration of Fata, NWFP governor or the Interior Ministry for the recovery of the abducted journalist, she added.

  Journalists boycott Senate proceedings on newsman missing
  Journalists boycotted the Senate proceedings soon after the question hour on Tuesday on the alleged abduction of Sohail Qulander a senior correspondent of an Urdu newspaper. Opposition alleged that journalist had been kidnapped by security agencies. However acting Chairman sent state minister to bring back newsmen to press gallery.

  Govt plans drive against obscenity
  The Home Department, Government of the Punjab is chalking out a comprehensive plan to curb the trend of obscenity and vulgarity at cinemas/ theatres and cable channels. In this regard, a meeting of stake-holders including representatives from Central Films Censor Board, PEMRA, Cable Operators, Film Producers, exhibitors, cinema owners, stage drama producers, directors and management of theatres will be held soon after Muharram.
