  Airport police detain, harass Reuters photo journalist
  A photo journalist associated with a UK based news agency was illegally detained and harassed on Thursday by the Airport police for over three hours and released after a large number of journalists reached the police station. Mian Khursheed associated with Reuters News Agency was picked up by traffic police as he was leaving airport for his office.

  SHC orders PEMRA to permit uplinking
  The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority is to grant ‘uplinking' permission to the television channel proposed to be launched by the Pakistan Herald Publications by the end of February, according to an order passed by the Sindh High Court on Thursday.

  Journalist injured in murder attempt
  Four Rawalpindi based journalists were injured in murder attempt by four fraudsters on Wednesday evening. According to the police sources, it was a local money dispute, newsmen were accompanied with a person to settle the money conflict. On return, opponents rammed the car carrying journalists. Police have registered the case.

  Daily Express Peshawar Resident Editor missing for 16 days
  Peshawar journalists’ community have expressed deep concern over the missing Resident Editor of daily Express Peshawar Sohail Qalandar. He has been missing with his driver Naiz. Community has set up an action committee headed by senior journalist Shamim Shahid. Community has urged govt to take steps to ensure safe recovery. They have also appealed to kidnappers for release on humanitarian grounds.

  Peshawar-based journalists Thursday finally broke their silence on the kidnapping of one of their colleagues, Sohail Qalandar, Resident Editor Urdu daily Express, who along with his friend, Niaz, mysteriously went missing from Posh Hayatabad town some 17 days ago.

  Fire at PTV centre
  A fire broke out at a studio in Pakistan Television’s Lahore Centre on Thursday evening damaging furniture, two sets and equipment. “The fire erupted owing to a short-circuit at Studio-B at 7:20pm when interview recording for ‘Rata Gaiy’ was in progress,” an eyewitness told this reporter on condition of anonymity.

  Media should project Pakistan’s true image
  The government wants the media to develop and project a true image of Pakistan and adhere to cultural and ethical norms, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Thursday. Aziz, speaking at a ceremony to distribute radio licenses for Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the Northern Areas, said that due to the freedom given to the media by the present government, more than 50 TV channels and 100 radio stations were currently operational, creating many jobs. He said that Pakistan’s free media policy had been acknowledged worldwide and had allowed people to express their feelings freely.

  Prime Minister Shuakat Aziz has declared media freedom in Pakistan ideal for world. Media freedom has increased huge of responsibility for media community. He asked media to ensure protection of national values. He was addressing distribution ceremony of 14 licenses for establishment of FM stations in the country.

  Chief Minister Punjab Pervaiz Elahi has said that no delay will be tolerable for journalists colony. Development work is being monitored. Plots will be handed over in 2007. He was talking to a delegation of Rawalpindi Islamabad Press Club.
