  State of the press
An annual report by the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) on the state of the media in the region presents a mixed picture. On the one hand, it takes note of the rapid rise in the number of television channels in South Asia, it also speaks at some length about the dangers that journalists of the region have to face in the course of carrying out their professional duties. All the countries that make up the region are not exactly havens for press freedom but that is probably true for many developing countries. Of course, that doesn’t justify the imposition of curbs on the media, which are often placed by governments in the name of national security, maintenance of law and order and other such amorphous (and hence malleable) reasons.

  Not such a free Press
The South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) has put together a report on the freedom of the media in South Asia. But what concerns us here is the section on Pakistan. The country topped the list for abductions and killings of journalists during the past year. The tribal areas have been turned into no-go areas for journalists and the situation in Balochistan and interior Sindh remains quite dangerous for journalists.

  A hundred years of radio
Anwer Mooraj's article about Radio history.
THE percentage of people listening to the radio in this country these days has dropped. Perhaps it’s because television has managed to spread its tentacles into regions previously considered inaccessible. Or because other sources of receiving news, like the internet or the mobile phone have surfaced.

  FM Listening | Coffee party
“Hi, this is Ayeshah Alam with Coffee party…” is how listeners hear the RJ who on every Monday to Friday from 10 am to 12 pm tunes into City FM 89. The name of the show ‘Coffee Party’ is vibrant just like its host who is an actress, producer, director, model, an event manager and if that was not enough, she is a mother of three daughters. RJ Ayeshah Alam is a lady who never fails to come up with a topic that leaves listeners pulsating. It is rather surprising to see a lady from a glamorous and colorful world spill beans in a medium where the whole game is about playing with one’s voice. What was it that really inspired her to join this profession; her confidence or the passion for this field?
