Newspaper editor killed in Khairpur |
|
Makhdoom Mohammad Rafiq, chief editor of Sindhi newspaper Nijaat, was killed by unidentified men, apparently in a dispute over property, in Khairpur on Saturday.
Two motorcyclists shot him at a flourmill near his house and fled. Rafiq was taken to Taluka Hospital in Gambat, where he died. Residents of the area said Rafiq was involved in a property dispute with people of the Channa clan. The disputed plot is situated near Abul Wah in Khuhra. A case has not been registered so far but police have raided houses of several men from the Channa clan and arrested a number of suspects whose names they did not reveal. Rafiq will be buried on Saturday night or Sunday morning. He is survived by three widows, four sons and three daughters.

Sindhi daily editor shot dead |
|
Makhdoom Rafiq, proprietor and editor of Sukkur-based Sindhi daily Nijat, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Khora Town (Gambat Taluka) Saturday. The police said a group of four or five armed men intercepted Makhdoom Rafiq in the Khora Town bazaar at about 10:30 am and opened fire at him. As a result, he died on the spot. However, the assailants fled after the shooting. Police from a nearby post rushed to the spot and shifted the body to the Gambat Taluka Hospital. The police registered a case and started investigation. Makhdoom Rafiq is survived by three widows, four sons and three daughters.

Chief Editor of local daily killed |
|
Chief Editor of a local Sindhi daily "Nijaat" Mohammad Rafique Hashmi was assassinated in Khuhra town of Gambat taluka on Saturday. Reports reaching here said that about three to four armed men opened fire at Mr. Hashmi when he was sitting at his Otaq (guest house) in Khuhra town. He was rushed to taluka hospital Gambat in serious condition but died before getting any medical help. The body was handed over to relatives after post-mortem. The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained and no case was registered till the story was filed. Late Hasmi single-handedly brought out daily Nijaat in 1974-75 from Sukkur and managed its administration and reporting throughout the years.

Journalist shot dead |
|
Makhdoom Mohammad Rafiq, Chief Editor of Daily Nijjat, was shot dead by unknown men in Khuhra in the Khairpur district on Saturday. Reports said Makhdoom Rafiq was sitting outside his house when two armed men, riding on a motorbike, opened fire on him and fled. Rafiq was shifted to the Taluka hospital, Gambat, where he died while being treated. According to the area people, the murder was the result of a land dispute. No case was registered till the filing of this report. Meanwhile, local journalists expressed their anger over the murder of Makhdoom Rafiq and demanded of the government to arrest the culprits immediately and award them exemplary punishment.

Journalists protest security official’s misbehavior |
|
Protesting over the alleged misbehavior of security officials with protocol officer of Press Information Department (PID), journalists briefly boycotted the coverage of visiting Indian Foreign Minister. Protocol officer of PID was pushed by Special Branch officials and slapped him on the face. The Officers of Foreign Ministry and SP Special branch apologized to the journalists and removed the concerned officials from scene.
