19 Pakistani Journalists killed in 7 years (Report by Intermedia Pakistan) |

PRESS RELEASE
ISLAMABAD: The last seven years in Pakistan – from 2000 to 2006 – have seen murders of 19 journalists but only in few cases the accused were prosecuted by the government and in one case only, sentenced by the court. The dead include three staff members of a newspaper killed in a bomb attack in Karachi.
Statistics compiled by Intermedia, a Pakistani media development NGO, from published reports show that of the 19 journalists killed during the seven years, five died in the restive tribal areas adjacent to Afghanistan. |

Pakistan tops SA list in killed journalists |
|
Despite some advancement in press freedom, Pakistan tops the list in murdered journalists with four killed in 2006, followed by Sri Lanka where two journalists and five media employers were murdered in 2006. The South Asia Media Monitor 2006 launched here on Thursday by the South Asia Press Commission said that two journalists were killed in Afghanistan and India and one in Nepal in 2006. Although no journalist was killed in Bangladesh, the country still remains a dangerous place for the profession. The report termed the Maldives “a prison for journalists” and said that there was no letup in curbs on the press in the country in 2006.

|
The previous year had been worst for the Pakistani media as four journalists, the highest number in South Asia, were killed in Pakistan in addition to numerous threatened, kidnapped, harassed and beaten by the 'state and non state actors'. The chilling details were brought forth by the South Asia Media Monitor, 2006 released here Thursday by the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA), which has given graphic details of the state of journalism and working journalists in the South Asia. Sharing the details of the Monitor, SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam said a total of 11 journalists were killed in the SAARC countries during 2006. "Of them, four were killed in Pakistan, two each in India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka and one in Nepal," he said.

Amendment to 7 media related laws sought |
|
South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) has sought legislators’ support to get seven media related ordinances amended. In a letter addressed to all the parliamentary leaders, association said it had prepared drafts proposing clause-by-clause amendments to these ordinances which in the present form violated press freedom in the country.

CPNE against gagging press |
|
A meeting of the Standing Committee of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) chaired by its President Syed Faseeh Iqbal made clear that the CPNE with the help of civil society would resist all steps aimed at gagging press. It discussed the government-press relations, law and order situation, some incidents faced by editors, situation in Balochistan, FATA and the need for transparent polls. After strong protest of the CPNE, the APNS, and a debate in the Standing Committee of Senate, Information Minister told Standing Committee of Senate that the government did not want to set up Press Regulatory Authority.
