An overview of South Asian media in 2006
Imtiaz Alam outlines South Asian media in 2006. Overall picture of the media in South Asia, both in terms of industry and professional freedom, was relatively good this year than last year. While the electronic media continued to expand in almost all the countries of the region, the on-line media set new records of increasing cyber citizenry. With the invasion of multi-media, the print media is also adopting new ways to adjust to the changing times. A most remarkable development was the democratic revolution in Nepal that also freed the media from the clutches of censorship and official control. The Nepalese media deserve our gratitude for having valiantly fought for press freedom during the king's authoritarian reign. But there are countries and areas that remain under the darkness of curbs on press freedom.

  Pak-Afghan press skirmish continues
Pak-Afghan skirmishing through newspaper columns continues with the latest shot being fired by the Pakistan Embassy taking the Afghan Ambassador to task for accusing Islamabad of backing terrorist incursions into his country. A letter from Nadeem Haider Kiyani, the Pakistan Embassy’s Press Attaché, takes exception to a letter from Afghan ambassador Said T. Jawad, as well as an earlier Washington Post editorial, that had described Pakistan as a “sanctuary” of terrorism. He writes that instead “of pointing fingers, the international community, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, needs to work together against terrorism”.

FM LISTENING | Uncanny ads on FM channels
All media outlets flourish on advertisements as it is their only source of earning. They are also important for masses as these ads inform people about the features and accessibility of myriad of products in the market. Making an ad is not an easy job, as it needs a lot of creativity involving background information and some knowledge about psyche of target audience etc. Just like any program produced to attract the audience, creative workers also try to captivate the target audience. Even the ad of a cheap product, if made well definitely leaves a great impact on consumers’ mind and helps to promote that product in the market.
