Fm listening | A sad new beginning
It is an acknowledged fact all over the world that when we are associated with someone we admire, we unintentionally forge an emotional relationship when them. And when their presence in our lives is no more, we are saddened beyond our expectations. Sometimes though, new rays of light emerge in the form of their 'substitutes', and if these 'new people' turn out to be even nearly as good, then they eventually make those losses bearable if not completely forgettable. But what if these 'new additions' do not even come close to matching the standards set by those before them? They would then most defiantly fail to bridge the void.

Celebrities Saud, Salma Agha and Umar Sharif, who participated in the MQM rally against extremism Sunday, unanimously decried the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa developments and said that implementing ‘Kalashnikov’ Shariat in Pakistan would mean an end to the arts. The Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, in Islamabad and its attached male and female religious schools have challenged the government of President Pervez Musharraf and launched Taliban-style morality patrols against music and video shops.

The rumor virus
The News Editorial, “When the wildest conspiracy theories often turn out to be more prosaic than reality, it is only natural that this country is a most fertile breeding ground for rumours, however outrageous they might be. And this is what made Friday the 13th in the Islamic republic more unsettling than most. The country’s favorite toy, the mobile phone, became an object of terror that day, as anxious people began jamming the switchboards of newspaper offices, television channels and phone companies to check up on the veracity of a terrifying new rumour. The story, with minor variations, was that a deadly virus had been unleashed that could kill unsuspecting mobile phone users who answered calls from a malicious caller. The call could send out dangerous rays that could cause bleeding from the ears, a severe electric shock and, in its most extreme form, a terrible death.”

Shaukat wants Leaguers to watch ‘truth’ on PTV
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Sunday advised the Leaguers to watch PTV as a source of correct information on the judicial crisis and the anti-government protests being held in this regard. Aziz, addressing a gathering of the PML-Q, noted with concern that the private channels had been playing up the issue through selective close shots of tyre-burning and exaggerated the number of protesters. In the two-and-half-hour meeting held at the PM House, the members of PML-Q Central Working Committee failed to learn anything new except a repeat of what has already appeared in the press. A number of questions about the judicial crisis, Talibanisation and the forthcoming general elections were left unanswered. The government’s top lawyer, senator Waseem Sajjad, briefed the participants about the presidential reference. Instead of predicting the possible outcome and an insight into the merits and demerits of the reference, he elaborated Article 209 of the Constitution that is all about the constitution of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
