  150 FM radio stations banned, NA told
  The government has banned 150 FM radio stations for broadcasting prohibited content including Indian songs beyond allowed quantity, Minister of State for Information Tariq Azim told the National Assembly (NA) Monday during question-hour. On a question asked by Akbar Chitrali, the minister said 16 public sector FM radio stations were operating in the country in Rawalpindi, Sarghodha, Minwali, Bannu, Kohat, Mithi, Gwadar, Chitral, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad, Faisalabad and Daska, Sialkot. He said no public sector including PBC FM station is airing Indian songs, while according to the PEMRA directives, 10 percent Indian content is allowed to broadcast. “Many FM stations are airing more than the allowed content and violating the standards around 150 FM stations has been banned,” he added.

  Cleric launches drive against female education
  The campaign launched by a cleric through his FM channel against girls’ education is gathering momentum as hundrends of students have stopped attending schools on the advice of their elders. Maulana Fazllullah son in law of Sufi Muhammad has launched aggressive campaign through his FM channel from a small village of Imam Dehri close to Mangora town Sawt.

  Parliamentary TV channel to be set up
  The senate finance committee approved proposal to set up a parliamentary TV channel with a view to ensure free flow of information. To keep the public aware of the activities of elected representatives, the channel would cast the proceedings of the house and parliamentary committees. A committee headed by Syed Mushahid Hussain will formulate the proposal.

  Journalists demand recovery of Qalandar
  On the call of Faisalabad Union of Journalists, hundreds of local journalists, politicians, lawyers and representatives of cross sections of society Monday staged a protest demonstration outside the Press Club to express their resentment and anguish over the failure of the government agencies in recovery of Peshawar-based journalist, Sohail Qalandar. The protestors declared that the failure of government agencies in recovery of Qalandar was a criminal negligence of the rulers.

  Missing newsman’s recovery demanded
  Journalists held a protest meeting at Karachi Press Club and marched up to Governor’s House on Monday to protest against the abduction of Mr Sohail Qalander, Resident Editor of Daily Express Peshawar, and demanded that the government ensure his early recovery. Journalists in the protest meeting condemned the growing phenomenon of kidnapping and slammed the government for failing to protect the common man. The meeting criticised the government’s inaction and noted that despite the passage of 50 days, the journalist remained untraced. The protest meeting and rally was organised by the Karachi Union of Journalists, in response to a call by the Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).The KUJ rejected the argument that the government was unable to trace the missing journalist and said that it reserved the right to approach international fora for his recovery in case the government’s apathy persisted.

  Journalist community held protest rally in Peshawar against government inability to trace missing journalist. Representatives from all walks of life participated in rally. They asked government to take immediate step for recovery of missing journalist.

  Countrywide protest for missing journalist
  On call of PFUJ, journalists held countrywide protest rallies for missing journalist. In Islamabad, journalists as a protest blocked the Melody Road. Afzal Butt asked President Mushrraf to take notice of the situation. In a resolution passed, representatives from all walks of life asked government for strict action.

  Journalists stage walkout
  Journalists covering Monday’s session of the Sindh Assembly staged a token walkout against the government’s failure to recover Sohail Qalander, Resident Editor of the Daily Express, Peshawar. Soon after the house was called to order by Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, journalists in the Press Gallery walked out to lodge a protest. Earlier, they journalists held a meeting in the press chamber at the Assembly Building with KUJ President Shamim-ur-Rehman in the chair. Through a resolution, they condemned Sohail Qalander’s ‘kidnapping’, and demanded his early recovery. Through another resolution, the meeting deplored registration of an FIR to implicate a cameraman of the Kawish TV channel, Hadi Sangi, in a false case.

  PBC employee gets national excellence award
  Sardar Ali managed to revive transmission of Radio Azad Kashmir after October 8 earthquake. Senior staff member of PBC and deputy controller FM 101 and news and current affairs Radio Pakistan Peshawar Sardar Ali Khan was decorated with PBC national broadcasting excellence award 2006.

  Media role important in national development
  Managing Director PTV Ashraf Azeem has said that media is playing an important and pivotal role in national development. Whole credit for this goes to present regime. PTV is fulfilling its responsibility. He was addressing opening ceremony of new courses in PTV academy.
