How to avoid Defamation - Hataq-ezat ka kanon

 English Edition

 Urdu Edition

This is the second guidebook produced by Internews Pakistan as a part of the Media Manager's Companion Series. It explores the intricacies of defamation and Pakistani laws concerning contempt of court and makes it easier for local journalists to understand their legal rights and responsibilities. In an easy-to-understand language and format the guidebook explains how media practitioners should take recourse to justice as and when the situation arises.

The present volume opens with basic definition of defamation and contempt laws of Pakistan , as they existed in December 2003.

In chapter 1 the concepts of defamation have been explained. It also sheds light on the main parties in a defamation suit, like plaintiff and defendants which may also include the editor, reporter and the publisher.
In chapter 2 an effort has been made to explain the procedural norms of a defamation case. The chapter explains various stages of the decree/judgement by the court and the right to appeal.
Chapter 3 looks at defences available to the journalists against defamation charges while
chapter 4 deals with penalties, punishments and amount of damages claimed and decreed.
This is followed by chapter 5 that focuses on contempt of court laws of Pakistan .
In the same fashion, chapter 6 is all about prevention rather than cure as far as defamation laws are concerned.
