Muhammad Najeeb started his journalistic career as an intern with The News in 1990 and left the paper in 1997 as News Editor. He was editor for Pakistan 's first private news agency – News Network International – for four years and left the organization in 2000. Najeeb has since covered Indo-Pak issue, politics and peace for Indo-Asian News Service. He had also worked on development issues and remained associated with TheNetwork for Consumer Protection for 18 months in 2002-2004.
Throughout that career, he had mentors, starting with his schoolteacher Mr. David Wyllie who forced him to write for the school magazine in grade-8. And Mr Habibur Rehman Sidiqui who pushed him into a radio program “Science ki Duniya” the same year.
Then there was Mr. D. Shaw Khan at The News, who taught him the first lesson in journalism by telling, ‘tell people what you know and do not bullshit about what you don't know.'
Today, Najeeb is working to strengthen journalists' faith in their craft through Intermedia. He says, “If the purpose of journalism is to provide citizen-consumers with the information they need to govern themselves, then the obligation of journalists is to look for information that citizens need, not what advertisers want.”
And for romantic reasons to become a journalist, Najeeb says, after introduction of new media – bogglers and television and radio channels -- people are flooded with information that comes in a form that looks journalistic. “It's responsibility of reporters and desk editors to let the citizens know the difference -- by putting them first, by keeping the news in proportion, by monitoring the powerful and by remaining true to your personal conscience.”
