Strengthening Community Narratives on Air in Tribal Areas

Promoting Local Voices from the Border Regions on Radio

This Intermedia project aims to educate, inform and engage the people of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) via discussions and interviews and opinions of the people of FATA.

This initiative seeks to raise the profile of communities in FATA through specially-produced radio programs that highlight local voices debating local issues. This is being done through production of a 15-minute daily radio program “ Da Ulas Ghag ” or “ Voices of the People ” by a team of reporters based in FATA and produced at Intermedia production facilities in Peshawar in KP.

“Da Ulas Ghag” (“Voices of the People”) is the only independent current affairs radio program being produced about and for FATA by local journalists and covers a vast range of topics . The program series is acclaimed for being informative and interactive in nature. Bringing the voices of FATA residents on air has been frequently appreciated in feedback programs.

During this project period (December 2008 to December 2010), a bout 500 “Da Ulas Ghag” (“Voices of the People”) radio programs are scheduled to be produced of which about 350 had been produced by mid-2010.

The program goes on air on Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Pakistan) – on AM transmission covering most of FATA, large parts of KP and some parts of Afghanistan – as well as selected FM stations in FATA and KP.

Some of the topics covered by “Da Ulas Ghag” (“Voices of the People”) radio programs include interviews, discussions and information from all seven agencies of FATA on conflict, health, education, IDPs [internally displaced persons], culture, women's issues, infrastructure development, environment, energy conservation, children, etc.

Implemented by Intermedia, this project is funded by the USAID-supported FATA Capacity Building Program of Development Alternatives, Inc (DAI) .
