Promoting Safety and Security of Pakistani Journalists

Making Reporting Safer in Conflict Regions

This Intermedia project aims to increase the safety of Pakistani journalists in conflict-affected areas in the country through training, adoption of safety procedures and bringing all relevant stakeholders – including state authorities – on board.

The project will see establishment of a safety mechanism for journalism practitioners in, particularly in the conflict affected regions, to lobby for greater protection of journalists, and to train journalists to adopt practices that can keep them safe.

The proposed safety mechanism includes setting up a Safety Fund for journalists, fast-track responses to journalists under threat, safe houses, hotlines, safety training and secure communications for journalists.

During the first phase (August 2010 to January 2011) of the 3-year project, the following activities will be undertaken by Intermedia in partnership with the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ):

•  Establishment of a Safety Fund for journalists
•  An advocacy conference of media stakeholders on safety
•  Two national training workshops on safety and risk-awareness for journalists
•  Production of a manual on safety and risk awareness of journalists

Implemented by Intermedia in partnership with the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), this project is funded by the governments of Denmark and Norway through the European INGO International Media Support (IMS) .
